Viability Scan
7 weeks - 11 weeks
Also known as a Dating Scan, this will typically be your first scan. The viability scan is done from 7 weeks onwards and is available to make sure that all is well with the early pregnancy. It is especially useful in cases of vaginal bleeding, fertility treatment or to rule out ectopic pregnancies. The viability scan will check:
- When your baby is due (if you are over 9 weeks)
- How many babies you are carrying
- Your baby's heartbeat
Most often, the clinician will perform this scan ‘trans-abdominally’, which means through the tummy.
The scan will take approximately 10 minutes. and is best visualised with a full bladder.
